Paris Hilton left jail Tuesday after a bizarre, three-week stay in which the hotel heiress was briefly released to her Hollywood Hills home, then sent screaming and crying back to a county lockup.
The 26-year-old celebutante walked out of the all-women’s jail in Lynwood to an enormous horde of cameras and reporters after midnight. She had checked into the jail, largely avoiding the spotlight, late June 3 after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards.
Hilton smiled as she left the jail, her blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail. Her parents, Kathy and Rick, met her in a black SUV as cameras snapped pictures and Hilton, wearing a gold blouse with white trim over a white shirt and black slacks, waved to the crowd.
She didn’t say anything, and it wasn’t immediately clear where she was going.
“She fulfilled her debt. She was obviously in good spirits. She thanked people as she left,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.
Hilton will complete her probation in March 2009 as long as she keeps her driver’s license current and doesn’t break any laws. She can reduce that time by 12 months if she does community service that could include a public-service announcement, the city attorney’s office has said.
Hilton began her 45-day sentence for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. She was mostly confined to a solitary cell in the special needs unit away from the other 2,200 inmates.
She spent only three days there and was released with electronic monitoring by Sheriff Lee Baca for an unspecified medical condition that he later said was psychological. The following day Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, who sentenced the hotel heiress, called her back into court and ordered her returned to jail, saying he had not condoned her release.
Hilton left the courtroom in tears calling for her mother and shouting, “It’s not right!”
She was then taken to the downtown Twin Towers jail, which houses men and the county jail’s medical treatment center, where she underwent medical and psychiatric exams to determine where she should be confined.
Hilton’s stay there cost taxpayers $1,109.78 a day, more than 10 times the cost of housing inmates in the general population.
The move by Baca caused a firestorm of criticism over whether the celebrity was getting special treatment. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has launched an investigation into whether the multimillionaire received special treatment because of her wealth and fame.
At least one person has filed a claim against the county alleging she “had serious medical issues” but was treated much worse than Hilton.
A few days into her stint at the Twin Towers medical ward, the heiress revealed in a phone call to Barbara Walters a new outlook on life.
“I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute,” Hilton said during the call, according to an account posted June 11 by Walters on ABC’s Web site.
“It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me,” Hilton was quoted as saying.
Hilton’s path to jail began Sept. 7, when she failed a sobriety test after police saw her weaving down a street in her Mercedes-Benz on what she said was a late-night run to a hamburger stand.
She pleaded no contest to reckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
In the months that followed, she was stopped twice by officers who discovered her driving with a suspended license. The second stop landed her in Sauer’s courtroom, where he sentenced her to jail.

Pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and 7-year-old son were found slain Monday at their Fayetteville home, authorities said.
Detective Bo Turner told television station WAGA that the case was being investigated as a murder-suicide, but said that could not be confirmed until the evidence was examined by a crime lab.
WAGA reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and son over the weekend, and then himself sometime Monday.
A concerned neighbor called police. The bodies were found in three different rooms.
The lead investigator, Sheriff’s Lt. Tommy Pope, told The Associated Press that the deaths were being investigated as homicide, and said the cause of death awaited autopsy results on Tuesday.
Pope said the three were found about 2:30 p.m., but he would release no other details about the deaths at the house in a subdivision near White Water Country Club.
World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that Benoit, 40, his wife, Nancy, and son, who was named Daniel, were found dead, but also had no other details.
Benoit, a native of Canada, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles over his career.
“WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family’s relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy,” the federation said in a statement on its Web site.
Benoit was scheduled to perform at the “Vengeance” pay-per-view event Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called “personal reasons.”
Benoit maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.
The WWE canceled its live “Monday Night RAW” card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.
Benoit’s wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name, “Woman,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site.
They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of an ongoing storyline on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.
Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.
The federal-style house is in a secluded neighborhood set back about 60 yards off a gravel road, surrounded by stacked stone wall and double-iron gate.
Monday night, the house was dark except for a few outside lights. There was a police car in front, and two uniformed officers.

Cameron Diaz apologized Sunday for a fashion faux pas of the political sort.
Diaz, 34, had visited Peru’s Machu Picchu on Friday carrying a green bag with a red star and the words “Serve the People” in Chinese.
The phrase, a slogan of the late Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong, touched a nerve among Peruvians still recovering from the Maoist Shining Path insurgency of the 1980s and early 1990s that left nearly 70,000 dead.
“It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims,” Peruvian human rights Pablo Rojas told the Associated Press. “I don’t think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology did so much damage.”
“I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended,” Diaz said Sunday in a statement e-mailed to the AP. “The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it.”
“I’m sorry for any people’s pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country’s history,” she added.
Diaz said in her statement she had been in Peru as part of 4 REAL, a Canadian TV show that celebrates young community leaders around the world, the AP reports. She also praised Peruvians’ beauty and warmth and said she hoped “for their continued healing.”

Following their April split after dating for five years, Prince William and former girlfriend Kate Middleton have resumed their relationship, according to widespread coverage in British newspapers on Sunday.
The two, both 25, attended a party earlier this month at an army barracks where William is posted as an army officer, the reports say.
In addition, William has invited Middleton, who is an accessories buyer at a company called Jigsaw, to the Concert for Diana, in memory of his mother, scheduled for London’s Wembley Stadium next Sunday, the Mail on Sunday reports.
The paper also claims the couple kissed at the June 9 army party, and that Middleton will spend time with William, his brother Harry and Harry’s girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, backstage at the Diana concert.
Per custom, a spokeswoman for William’s Clarence House office declined comment on the stories. “We don’t discuss William’s private life, it’s a matter for him,” she said.
Earlier this month, Joss Stone denied a report that she’s close friends with the royal – who only last week, on Thursday (his birthday), gained access to the estimated $500,000 to $600,000 annual interest generated by the $13 million left to him by his mother.

A fight broke out Sunday between the entourages of rap stars Ludacris and T.I. in Hollywood.
The scuffle took place at the Sunset Tower hotel at The Power Brunch-L.A., an event hosted by Warner Music Group EVP Kevin Liles and honoring Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete’s Hollyrod Foundation.
As the Peetes, Twista, 106 and Park host Rocsi, Musiq Soulchild, Yung Joc and others enjoyed mimosas, omelets and pancakes, witnesses say punches were exchanged between T.I. and Ludacris’s manager, Chaka Zulu.
The brawl escalated, with eight others joining the fracas as guests quickly hustled for the exits and spilled onto Sunset Boulevard, overwhelming valets and forcing deputies to halt traffic so cars could be retrieved. Security moved in and escorted T.I. out of the party. A witness says the rapper’s shirt was torn but he otherwise appeared uninjured.
During the fight, a woman was hurt and treated at the scene by L.A. County Fire Department paramedics, who later transferred her to an ambulance, according to a witness. Fire Department officials were unavailable for comment.
An L.A. County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman says six deputies were summoned to the hotel pool area at 2:50 p.m. after 10 members of the entourages started a melee, but there were no arrests.
“Basically we responded to a disturbance,” says Sgt. Kristin Aloma. “No report was taken. We were there in two or three minutes. There was an altercation between the entourages.” When deputies arrived to assist, “it was under control and the event security had taken care of it,” Aloma says.
According to MTV.com, the two rappers were longtime microphone rivals who made nice a few years ago, though T.I. boasts on his upcoming CD that he had the best rap album of last year even though Ludacris won the Grammy in that category.
Reps for both rappers did not return calls for comment.

Garth Fisher, a plastic surgeon on ABC’s Extreme Makeover, married former Playboy model Jessica Canseco on Saturday evening before 50 family members and close friends who gathered at the couple’s home in Bel-Air, Calif.
The intimate, black-tie ceremony took place in an orchard overlooking the mountains with views of the city and the Pacific, according to publicist Nancy Iannios.
The flower girls were the groom’s two daughters from his previous marriage, Neriah, 7, and Sierra, 5, as well as Canseco’s daughter Josie, 10. The maid of honor was the bride’s mother, Susan Sekely, who walked her daughter down the aisle.
Following dinner, five contortionists from Cirque du Soleil performed in the pool – one in a sphere and four synchronized in the water.
Fisher, 48, proposed to Canseco (who is now an aesthetician and image consultant in Beverly Hills) at a 2006 holiday party hosted by Dr. 90210 plastic surgeon Paul Nassif, who had introduced the couple a year before.
“I thought it would be romantic to propose to Jessica on the one-year anniversary of our introduction,” Fisher said at the time.
The bride’s ivory satin gown – hand-stitched with antique silver threading and beaded with Swarovsky crystals and baby pearls throughout the bodice and train – came from Simin Haute Couture in Brentwood, Calif. Fisher’s tuxedo was designed by Amir of Beverly Hills.
The couple will honeymoon in Italy and France.
Meanwhile, original episodes of Extreme Makeover are scheduled to air on ABC on July 2, 9 and 16, the network has announced. Fisher will be featured on the July 9 installment.
Fisher was previously married, from 1998 to 2005, to Rock Star: Supernova host Brooke Burke.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel went all the way across the world to find love…and a TGI Fridays.
When Biel, 26, joined Timberlake, 25, on his FutureSex/LoveSounds tour in Amsterdam on June 17, the lovebirds’ Scandinavian week of romance began. First, they hopped a private jet to Stockholm, Sweden, where Biel got in some good bonding and shopping time with Timberlake’s mom, Lynn Harless. Later, the couple and some friends dined at a café, where another diner says they had “very good conversation. They had fun together.”
As they left the restaurant, Biel and Timberlake hid from the press under umbrellas before getting into their car. There were no umbrellas to hide behind later, however, when they were spied kissing in front of their hotel.
After Timberlake’s concert in Stockholm (Biel watched from backstage), the pair boarded a bus for Oslo, Norway. There they made no attempt to hide their relationship, or their national pride, as they hit up the local T.G.I. Friday’s for a late lunch. With bellies full of cheesesticks, they strolled hand-in-hand to the Royal Norwegian Castle. Afterwards, they got on a yacht, which took them on a (gasp) three hour tour.
When they returned to land safely, the couple and their entourage grabbed dinner at gourmet restaurant Oro, which we hear does not have a Jack Daniel’s grill, and then headed off to their hotel for some privacy.
We hope that Biel will stay with Timberlake for the remainder of the tour, if only to find whether Applebees has crossed the Atlantic yet.

Nearly two months after her Southern California mini-tour in early May, Britney Spears is getting ready to hit the stage again.
June 30 at L.A.’s Greek Theatre, she’s due to join Cyndi Lauper, Erasure, Debbie Harry, The Dresden Dolls, The MisShapes with special guest Jeffree Star and host Margaret Cho live onstage for the “True Colors” concert tour, Spears’s choreographer, Misha Gabriel, said.
Friday at the Millennium Dance Complex in North Hollywood, the pop star held final callbacks to find the two male backup dancers she’ll add to her act.
Only snag, she never showed up.
The plan had been for Spears to select two guys (out of 21) to join her in the choreographic number she’ll perform at the Greek.
Instead, however, she put her two longtime trusted female backup dancers – Criscilla Crossland and Lark – in charge of the process. The two videotaped all the aspirants, for Spears to observe and select at a later time.
Earlier, on June 7 (also at Millennium), Spears was there to oversee auditions herself, with nearly 150 men seeking to pop, lock, whack, vogue, b-boy, breakdance, robot and moonwalk their way into her heart.
Those who were put through paces that day did so to Spears’s new, as-yet unreleased song.
As dancer Sam Pete, 25, described the tune: “It was dope. It reminded me of that one song you hear at 1:50 a.m., when they call last call at a club, and it’s the hottest, nastiest song you’ve ever heard in your life and you’ve just got to put your drink down and dance to it. You’ve got no choice. You’re body is insisting on it.”
